Short history of Norway
The first humans
settled in Norway after the end of the Ice Age, about 10 000 years
ago. For many thousand years, people lived from hunting, fishing and
farming. At the end of the 8th century, the first Viking raids
started. King Harald Fair-Hair united Norway around 900 AD and at
the height of the Middle Ages, the Kingdom of Norway also included
several islands in the west, including the Faeroe Islands, Iceland,
Greenland and parts of the British Isles.

Norway entered into union with Denmark in 1380 and officially became
a Danish province in 1537. In 1814, Norway was ceded to the King of
Sweden as a result of the Napoleonic Wars. In the same year,
Norwegians declared their independence and adopted their own
Constitution. The Swedish king accepted the Constitution with
certain amendments, which resulted in a personal union lasting until
1905. The union was formally dissolved after a referendum and
political negotiation with Sweden. The Danish prince Carl accepted
the offer to become the first Norwegian king Haakon VII.
